Questions

Am I allowed to sublet my room?+

Usually yes, as long as your main landlord agrees. In Switzerland, the landlord can only refuse for specific reasons (Art. 262 CO), such as rent that is too high or a sublet that would cause them serious disadvantage. GapStay drafts the consent request for you.

How much rent can I ask for?+

Ask for your own share of the rent, including utilities. Charging more than you pay is a common reason for a landlord to refuse, and it isn't what GapStay is for.

What happens to my things while I'm away?+

Most rooms are sublet furnished. The agreement includes a handover protocol so you and your subtenant record the room's condition at move-in and move-out.

How much does GapStay cost?+

Listing a room is free. Looking for a room is free for stays of up to 3 months. For longer stays you get verified once (CHF 19), or choose Priority (CHF 49 per search) if you need a room fast. Hosts can boost their listing to appear first in search, from CHF 9.

Are the documents legally binding?+

They are draft templates to save you time, not legal advice. Check them against your own lease and local rules, or ask your university's housing office, before you sign.
